Tanjore Art

Tanjore painting is a painting style unique to South India which originated in Thanjavur. While it draws its inspiration from paintings done during the rule of Cholas and later Rayas of Vijayanagara, it was only in the Maratha court of Thanjavur that it evolved into what we know as Tanjore painting today. This style of painting also shows influences of the Deccani and Company styles of painting.

The most striking feature of Tanjore painting is its glittering gold foil work. Bright and vivid color schemes, religious subjects, and decorative jewellery with inlay of gemstones, glass beads, and pieces are its other distinct characteristics.

Embellished with rubies, diamonds, and other precious gemstones and liberally overlaid with gold foil, Tanjore paintings added to the splendour of Royal palaces and temples, in the olden days. While semi-precious stones and glass beads are used in place of real stones now, usage of gold foil is unabated and a Tanjore painting continues to be a prized possession.
